چکیده
Introduction The ability to monitor and detect various chemical gases is important to many applications. One example is environmental monitoring, such as determining the air quality inside a room or closed chamber and detecting the presence and concentration of toxic or otherwise dangerous gases that may come from spills and leaks [1]. Monitoring and determining the constituents of a sample gas or environment involves collecting samples and analyzing them in complex and expensive laboratory analytical instruments such as a gas chromatographmass spectrometer (GC-MS). [1] Although GC-MS systems work very well, many applications need sensor systems that are smaller, more portable, and cheaper that are capable of identifying contaminants at the part-per-million (ppm) level. We have constructed a miniature electronic nose system consisting of an array of polymer/carbon black sensors fabricated on a silicon chip and interfaced with analog amplifiers and a commercial chip to process and collect the signal responses.

A miniature electronic nose system based on an MWNT-polymer microsensor array and a low-power signal-processing chip.
This article introduces a power-efficient, miniature electronic nose (e-nose) system. The e-nose system primarily comprises two self-developed chips, a multiple-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-polymer based microsensor array, and a low-power signal-processing chip. The microsensor array was fabricated on a silicon wafer by using standard photolithography technology. The microsensor array comprise...

An artificial olfactory system (or “electronic nose”) has been developed to investigate the interactions between polymer-modified sensors with odorant vapors from the headspace of primary alcohol samples. Complementary pairs of polymer-coated quartz crystal microbalance sensors and polymer/carbon black-coated microresistance sensors have been used to produce a characteristic value for the odora...

Today, the capability of the human olfactory system is still, in many ways, superior to that of the electronic nose. Although electronic noses are often compared with their biological counterpart, they neither mimic its neural architecture nor achieve its discriminating performance. Experimental studies on the mammalian olfactory system suggest that the nasal cavity, comprising of the mucous la...

We report a molecular modeling study to investigate the polymer-carbon black (CB) composite-analyte interactions in resistive sensors. These sensors comprise the JPL electronic nose (ENose) sensing array developed for monitoring breathing air in human habitats. The polymer in the composite is modeled based on its stereoisomerism and sequence isomerism, while the CB is modeled as uncharged napht...

An electronic nose that uses an array of 32 polymer-carbon black composite sensors has been developed, trained, and tested. By selecting a variety of chemical functionalities in the polymers used to make sensors, it is possible to construct an array capable of identifying and quantifying a broad range of target compounds, such as alcohols and aromatics, and distinguishing isomers and enantiomer...
